Pergola, Pavilion or Garden Room? Choosing the Right Structure for the Way You Live

Most people begin with an aesthetic preference and end up somewhere else entirely once services, planning and drainage are considered. Working the other way round is faster.

Pergola

Open or louvred overhead structure. The lightest intervention, the quickest to install, and the one that extends the shoulder seasons rather than the whole year. Rain protection depends entirely on whether the roof genuinely closes.

Pavilion

A solid roof with open or partly enclosed sides. Reliable shelter for dining, cooking and lounging in most weather, without becoming a building you heat.

Garden room

Insulated, glazed and serviced — effectively an additional room. It offers year-round use and, correspondingly, the most planning, foundation and services work.

A structure should resolve the whole garden, not sit in the middle of it.

Ask what the structure looks like from the kitchen window in February. That is the test most designs fail.

Foundations and drainage

Every option above needs a base designed for the ground conditions, and a plan for where water leaves the roof. Rushing this is the most common cause of movement, staining and rot a few years in. Confirm planning and building-regulations requirements with your local authority before committing.
