Ask what makes a hotel bathroom feel different and the answer is almost never the basin. It is that the room is warm before you enter it, quiet when you are in it, softly lit, and free of everyday clutter.

Heat first

Underfloor heating, a warm towel on demand and a room that recovers quickly after a shower change the experience more than any fitting. Cold tile at 6am undoes an expensive specification.

Then light

• A low-level circuit for evening use, separate from the bright circuit for mornings.
• Light near the mirror at face height rather than above it.
• Dimming on everything, with warm colour temperature after dark.
